Sydney, Australia, the nation’s oldest and largest city and capital of New South Wales. It is located on Port Jackson, an almost enclosed inlet and one of the finest natural harbors in the world. The city of Sydney, Sydney, or right, mainly from the central business district, approximately 11 square miles (28 km2) on the south shore of Port Jackson. Residential and industrial suburbs on the outskirts of the rest of the inlet and extending far inland, about 670 square miles (1,735 km2). Harbour Bridge spans Port Jackson in a large arch, which the city proper with North Sydney.
Sydney is one of the major ports of Australia and a large shopping center. It owes its prosperity to the busy cargo terminal, the line in the downtown waterfront. Production supply products as diverse as transportation, electrical machinery, oil products, chemicals, textiles, paper and wood products and processed foods. Banks and insurers contribute to Sydney as a global financial center status. Tourism is one of the leading companies in Sydney. The city is of great railways and highways and a major international airport.
Central Sydney, with its modern skyscrapers of glass, steel and concrete, leaving only a reference to the Victorian atmosphere that characterized the city before the Second World War. The main building is the modern Opera House, composed of a series of concrete shells, similar to the billowing sails. Built on a point projecting into the harbor, it has become one of the main attractions of the city. Notable buildings from the 19th century include Parliament House, Government House, City Hall and the Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals.
Sydney is a major cultural center. It has several museums, including the Australian Museum, with exhibits devoted to natural history of Australia and the Powerhouse Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. Sydney is home to the Australian Opera, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and several theater groups. Educational institutions include the University of Sydney (founded 1850) and the University of New South Wales (1948).
